Car City Records (St. Clair Shores, MI) Closing Sept. 30th

Yet another Detroit-area institution is falling:   Car City Records in St. Clair Shores is closing their doors after more than 30 years in business.   I will say that the store has been a shell of its former self for the last few years, but it is still sad to see another shop close up.  We lost Record Time back in January, and now Car City is closing on Sept. 30th.

Car City was founded as Car City Classics by Peter Dale, back in the late 70s.  Pete recently retired from his latest business, Encore Recordings (Ann Arbor), selling the store to his employees.

Car City is currently offering all titles at 50% off of the marked price for all used product, and $3 off of all new product.

Ann Arbor, MI: Good news for Encore Recordings customers!

I’m pleased to report that per Peter Dale, Encore Recordings will remain open. The store is being sold to two long-time employees who will carry on once Pete retires. This is great news for anyone in the area. We will have more details when time permits.

A NOTE FROM RECORD STORE DAY

A brief note of thanks to everyone who went out and supported their local record stores this weekend. We hope you had a great time, and that it made you resolve to visit again and again (even though we know there are a ton of you who already do that!) We never dreamed that our little party would become so loved, or so big. We appreciate all the kind words, and we even appreciate all the constructive criticism. Nothing in this world is perfect, and nothing that involves so many diverse people will ever make them all completely happy. But know that we are learning where we can and that we remain true to the mission that’s been behind Record Store Day from the start: Celebrating the culture of the record store. They are such a good thing to have around.

Record Time Takes Its Last Spin

Record TimeA nice article about the closing of Record Time was posted by Hour Detroit:

http://www.hourdetroit.com/Hour-Detroit/April-2011/Record-Time-Takes-Makes-Its-Final-Spin/
Another sad event in Detroit music retailing.  Owner Mike Himes had started Record Time in the early 80s, and saw swift sales as his traffic grew.  Thanks to the digital age, and record company bungling, he saw his business drop off.  He had expanded to two stores at one point, but consolidated back into one location (in Roseville) to cut costs.  In early March, the store finally closed up permanently.

Discussion thread started at the Speakeasy Forums.

AN EVENING WITH RSD RELEASES, WITH YOUR HOST CHRIS BROWN

Last year, a man in Maine sat down with his video camera to go through some of the cool things that had been arriving at his stores (Bull Moose) lately. That man was Chris Brown, who happened to think up the idea of Record Store Day in the first place, and his video featuring some of the pieces scheduled for release on Record Store Day 2010 was a big hit. Some of you have specifically requested that he do it again, and Chris is a good guy, so he sat down with his trusty camera and some releases you just might have on your wish list for Record Store Day 2011. Ladies and Gentlemen, without further ado: CHRIS BROWN AND THE RELEASES OF RECORD STORE DAY (appearing all week, remember to tip your waitress)

RECORD STORE DAY RELEASES

THEY’RE HERE! The thing a lot of you are looking forward to, of course, are the special pieces coming to your favorite record store on April 16. Here’s a list of them, one you can print out, check off and take to your local record store. We’re doing things a little differently this year, so you’ll see a few different categories here: downloadable pdf | view list on website RECORD STORE DAY RELEASESThese are titles that are only being released for this day. These are true Record Store Day Exclusives. “WINDOWED” RELEASES These are titles that will only be available in record stores on Record Store Day, but will someday be available to other retailers down the line. REGIONAL/SMALL RUN RELEASES These are titles that are being released only to a certain region of stores, or have such a small run or distribution that the majority of participating stores will not have access to them. We feel it’s important to include these releases and celebrate the spirit in which they are released. And remember: LIMITED EDITION, BABY. A lot of these titles have limited runs. You may not get your hands on all the pieces you want. Your STORE may not get their hands on all the pieces they want. That’s the nature of limited releases. But that’s what makes them so exciting!
